A scented candle is one of the few gifts that asks nothing of the person receiving it. It doesn't need to fit, it doesn't take up space, it doesn't sit in a drawer until everyone forgets about it. It gets lit on an ordinary evening and changes the room for a few hours.
The hard part is choosing. A fragrance isn't given like a book: it's closer to taste than to interest, and what strikes you as warm and sweet can be far too much for someone else. This guide is about choosing well, not about choosing quickly.
Choose for the person, not for the scent you like
The most common mistake is giving away the fragrance you'd buy for yourself. Try it differently: think about how their home looks and what they drink in the morning. It sounds childish, but it works.
If they love sweetness and their home is warm, full of textures — go fruity and gourmand. Ray of Sunshine, with lemon cake, or Summer Kiss, with ripe peaches. These are the fragrances that make people say "oh, that smells good" in the first second.
If they keep the house airy, in light tones, and avoid heavy perfumes — go fresh and citrus. A Holiday for Two, with pineapple and coconut, is the brightest candle on the shelf. And if you want something lighter still, the lemonade of Summer Starts Today comes as a wardrobe fragrance. Scents you notice without them imposing themselves.
If they're the romantic sort, who remembers dates and keeps concert tickets — floral is the obvious gift, and it's obvious because it works. First Love, with Japanese rose, or The First Bouquet.
If you don't know them well — don't guess. Pick something bright and widely liked: Warm Smile, with orange, is the hardest fragrance in the shop to refuse. Orange is the scent almost nobody finds off-putting.
How much to spend
There's no rule, but there are thresholds that feel natural:
- 30 RON — a wardrobe fragrance. For a colleague, a teacher, a thank-you.
- 38 RON — wax melts. For someone who never lights candles.
- 75–80 RON — a 200 g candle. For a friend, a sister, a birthday.
- 90 RON — Flowers & Emotions. For a mother, for someone close, for an occasion that matters.
- over 200 RON — two or three products, with free shipping. For a gift from several people together.
One thing worth saying: two small products chosen with care look better than a single more expensive one. A candle plus the wardrobe fragrance in the same scent — Warm Smile and Warm Smile for the wardrobe — comes to 110 RON and looks considered, not picked up on the way.
If the person doesn't light candles
Some people don't want a flame in the house. Parents with small children, someone with a cat that jumps onto shelves, someone who simply forgets what they've lit. For them, the right gift isn't a smaller candle — it's something else entirely.
Wax melts, 38 RON. Pieces of scented wax that melt in a burner, with no wick and no direct flame. They melt, harden again and get reused until the fragrance fades. If the person doesn't own a burner, buy one separately — it's worth arriving together with the wax, otherwise the gift goes unused. I've written about them at length here.
Wardrobe fragrance, 30 RON. It hangs on a clothes rail or sits on a shelf among the clothes. It doesn't heat up, doesn't get lit, doesn't ask for anything. Unforgettable, with Baccarat, is the most elegant of the range and the best choice for someone you want to impress quietly.
What suits the occasion
Birthday. Here you're allowed to be personal. Choose the fragrance for the person, as above, and add the greeting message at gift wrapping.
New home. Something fresh and neutral, not sweet. A new home smells of plaster and furniture, and a citrus scent makes it feel lived in sooner. Warm Smile, with orange, is the safest choice; A Holiday for Two, with pineapple and coconut, if you want something less expected.
Thank you. The 30 RON wardrobe fragrance is right for this. It's a gesture that puts nobody under obligation — exactly what you want from a thank-you.
Holidays. Order early. Not because stock runs out, but because couriers run late in December, and a gift that arrives on the 27th is no longer the same gift.
Three mistakes I see often
Picking the strongest scent in the shop. Intensity isn't a sign of quality. A fragrance that's too insistent in a small flat becomes tiring after twenty minutes, and the candle stays unlit on the shelf.
Buying "something pretty" without looking at the scent. The packaging is seen once, when it's opened. The fragrance is noticed every single time.
Giving a candle to someone who has just received three. It happens more often than you'd think, especially at Christmas. If you suspect as much, go for the wardrobe fragrance or wax melts — those are things people actually finish.
How to make it look like a gift
On every product you can tick gift wrapping, 5 RON per item, and write a greeting message. The message goes on the item, not on the order, so you can order for two people at once with different texts.
The five RON are worth it. Not for the paper — for not having to deal with it yourself the night before.
When to order
Delivery takes 2–4 working days from payment confirmation, by courier, anywhere in Romania. Shipping costs 19.90 RON and is free over 200 RON.
In practice: for a Friday gift, order by Tuesday. For the holidays, a week or two ahead. And if you still don't get the fragrance right, it can be returned within 14 days.
